Schoolcraft police find wanted man hiding under insulation

October 14, 2009, 10:48AM

SCHOOLCRAFT — Acting on a tip about the location of an alleged probation violator, Schoolcraft police arrested a 25-year-old Kalamazoo man Tuesday who they say tried to elude them by hiding beneath the insulation in an attic.

Authorities used a heat-seeking tool to discover his hiding place, according to a news release from the  Schoolcraft Police Department.

A circuit court probation office had requested that the man, whom police did not identify, be picked up for a probation violation, police said. The news release did not specify the violation.

Just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, officers went to an apartment complex in the 200 block of West Eliza Street, following up on a tip that the man was staying there.

Police, who first searched an apartment, said in the release that “it was apparent that someone had crawled into an attic space.”

A thermal-imaging camera belonging to the South Kalamazoo County Fire Authority was used to pinpoint the man’s location in the attic space beneath the insulation.

In addition to the probation violation, he faces charges of resisting and obstructing an officer. His case is expected to be reviewed by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office today.

Police also said that on Sept. 21 the man led officers on a high-speed pursuit that ended just outside Three Rivers.
